Overview

This project archive brings together licensable aerial photographs of Webb Dock at Port Melbourne. The collection records a working international container terminal and its relationship with the Yarra River entrance, Port Phillip Bay, the wider Port of Melbourne and the Melbourne skyline. It is suited to maritime trade, freight logistics, port infrastructure, planning, editorial and commercial visual research.

Redevelopment Context

Webb Dock, formerly known as River Entrance Dock, commenced operations in the 1950s and initially served Tasmania and general cargo. It developed progressively as Melbourne's maritime trade changed. Webb Dock East became an international container terminal in 2017. The February 2022 Aerial Now photographs record the terminal in active operation before the separate Webb Dock East Extension Project was completed in January 2024. That later project restored operational capacity through new wharf and hardstand works, pile replacement and berth-pocket dredging, enabling two large vessels to be accommodated at once. The photographs should therefore be read as a dated record of the 2017 terminal configuration, not as views of the completed 2024 extension.
